Hispanic Heritage Month: Celebrating & Embracing Diversity at Indiana Gateway Digital Academy

Community & Social
Hispanic Heritage Month

At Indiana Gateway Digital Academy (INGDA), we are proud to serve a diverse community of students from across Indiana. As part of our commitment to fostering an inclusive and enriching learning environment, we celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15 to October 15. This month-long observance allows us to recognize the profound impact that Hispanic and Latino Americans have had on our country and honor the vibrant cultures that contribute to our community.

The Importance of Hispanic Heritage Month

Hispanic Heritage Month began in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week and was expanded to a month in 1988 to reflect the growing influence and contributions of the Hispanic community. The celebration falls between September 15 and October 15, coinciding with the independence anniversaries of several Latin American nations, including Mexico, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Chile.

At INGDA, we believe that celebrating Hispanic Month is essential to building a community where every student feels seen, respected, and valued. By learning about Hispanic culture and history, students can:

  1. Better appreciate the diverse perspectives that enrich their education.
  2. Expand their interests by exploring a new culture.
  3. Strengthen their role as future leaders in Indiana’s global community.

How INGDA Supports a Diverse Student Community

Our student body at INGDA reflects the rich diversity of Indiana itself, including students from various cultural, racial, and ethnic backgrounds. This is a time to highlight the important contributions of Hispanic Americans, both in our state and across the country. It is also an opportunity to show our students how diversity in backgrounds and experiences can create a stronger, more vibrant community.

By learning about influential Hispanic leaders, from activist Dolores Huerta to astronaut Ellen Ochoa, our students can see the power of representation and be inspired to pursue their dreams, regardless of their background. At INGDA, we are committed to creating an educational environment where all students can thrive and feel proud of who they are.

Ways to Celebrate as a Family

Hispanic Heritage Month is a great time for families to explore Hispanic culture and traditions together. Here are some ways to celebrate:

  1. Explore Books Celebrating Hispanic Culture: Reading is a wonderful way to immerse yourself in different cultures and stories. Families can explore books that highlight Hispanic history, achievements, and traditions. These stories provide valuable lessons in empathy, inclusion, and leadership.
  2. Enjoy Hispanic Music and Art: From lively salsa music to colorful murals, Hispanic art forms are known for their vibrancy and creativity. Take time to explore these artistic traditions as a family and discuss how they reflect the experiences and history of the Hispanic community.
  3. Learn About Hispanic Traditions and Holidays: Celebrations such as Día de los Muertos or Hispanic holiday traditions offer a glimpse into the values and customs of Hispanic cultures. These celebrations are an opportunity for students and families to connect with diverse traditions and gain a deeper understanding of the world around them.
  4. Share Family Histories: If your family has Hispanic roots, sharing stories about your heritage can be a meaningful way for students to connect with their cultural background. Learning about their family’s history can inspire students to embrace their unique identity and feel empowered in their educational journey.

Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with Must-Read Books
