INGDA Student Wins K12 Art Competition

Stories & Spotlights
INGDA Student Wins K12 Art Competition!

At Indiana Digital Gateway Academy (INGDA), we recognize the importance of creating opportunities for students to discover and pursue their unique passions. From exploring career paths to expressing themselves creatively, we encourage students to find avenues that fuel them through classes, extracurriculars, competitions, and more.

Annie, a sophomore at INGDA, recently won first place in photography for her grade level in the K12 Art Competition, an annual contest open to students who attend K12-powered schools like INGDA nationwide. A panel of judges selects a first- and second-place winner in each K-12 grade for physical art, digital art, and photography.

Annie’s winning photo, titled “Monty,” features her kitten looking timidly at the camera. Her family has seven cats, which are her favorite subjects.

“I love capturing their personalities through the camera lens,” Annie said. “The kitten in the photo I submitted was especially shy, and his expression represented how skittish he was while he was still getting comfortable with his environment.”

The storytelling component of photography is what appeals most to Annie. Her passion for telling stories extends to her English classes, where her teachers encourage her to leverage her creativity through writing. After she graduates, Annie hopes to pursue a career as a screenwriter, developing storylines and scripts for movies and TV shows.

“It makes me happy when I’m creating narratives,” Annie said. “I watch shows like ‘Stranger Things’ and ‘Sullivan’s Crossing’, and it’ll inspire me to create my own worlds and characters.”

Since joining INGDA in fifth grade, Annie has been able to focus more of her time in creative outlets.

After her first experience with online learning during the COVID-19 pandemic, she and her family realized that a virtual learning environment was the right fit for her.

“I love that INGDA allows me to focus on academics without the distractions I had in a traditional classroom,” Annie said. “My teachers are always helpful, and I enjoy the flexibility I have learning from home.”
