Supporting the Whole Family: How Online Learning at INGDA Helped One Household Thrive

Family support built in! Explore how a virtual school experience brought calm, connection, and confidence to an entire family, proving that when a school cares for the whole student, it uplifts the entire household.
At Indiana Gateway Digital Academy (INGDA), we understand that school doesn’t just impact students—it affects the entire family. During Mental Health Awareness Month, we’re proud to spotlight families like Jamie’s, who have found stability, family support, and peace through our virtual learning environment.
A Shift Toward Stability and Wellness
Before enrolling at INGDA, Jamie’s daughters, who are in sixth and ninth grades, were experiencing growing anxiety tied to the traditional school day. The morning alarm clock brought pressure to get ready quickly to not miss the bus, and the school day itself was equally as stressful. Large class sizes, coupled with environments where questions weren’t encouraged made learning incredibly difficult. The stress of the in-person learning environment quickly rippled into their home life.
“We were stuck in a stressful routine that wasn’t working anymore,” Jamie shared. “Even before I woke them up for the day, I was concerned about their morning anxiety and dread of the brick-and-mortar setting. This created stress for my husband and me as we constantly worried if we were doing the right thing for them.”
Their search for a better solution led them to INGDA, which changed everything.
A Smooth Experience with Family Support
From the very beginning, Jamie noticed a difference. INGDA’s structure, clear communication, and thoughtful approach to virtual learning brought immediate relief and family support.
“From day one, INGDA felt different,” she said. “The expectations were manageable, and the support was constant. It wasn’t just easier on my daughters—it helped us settle into a healthier, more balanced routine as a family.”
As her daughters adjusted, they regained confidence and enjoyment in their learning. As their comfort grew, so did their engagement in the virtual classroom setting.
“We believe that supporting a student means supporting their whole family,” said Mellie Andres, 7th grade school counselor at INGDA. “When we connect with families, we’re listening to what’s happening at home, helping navigate challenges, and offering tools that strengthen emotional well-being. That kind of support changes everything—not just for a student’s academics, but for their relationships, their home life, and their confidence.”
Prioritizing Mental Health and the Family Dynamic
What stood out most to Jamie was how much INGDA values mental wellness for students and the entire family.
“I LOVE how INGDA focuses on mental health,” Jamie said. “They don’t just care about grades and assignments. They care about how our kids—and we as parents—are doing overall.”
Mental wellness is woven into the school’s culture. Whether it’s teacher check-ins, access to resources, or grace during challenging times, families feel seen, heard, and supported.
Building a Learning Coach Community
As a Learning Coach, Jamie also found an unexpected source of strength in the INGDA Learning Coach Community.
“It’s such an amazing resource for me,” she said. “Not only can I find important school information and calendars, but I also get so much support from other Learning Coaches, INGDA’s Community Engagement Specialist, and INGDA staff. Everyone is always kind and helpful, not just with school topics, but everything else that comes with being a parent.”
The community helped Jamie feel less alone and more empowered, reinforcing INGDA’s commitment to supporting every household member.
Family Support Means A Healthier Home, A Brighter Future
Jamie says her daughters are thriving—and so is her family.
“This school has been a blessing in so many ways,” she shared. “It brought peace back into our home. It helped my daughters enjoy learning again. It reminded me that I don’t have to carry everything alone.”
At INGDA, we’re honored to support families like Jamie’s. As we recognize Mental Health Awareness Month, we remain committed to nurturing academic success and emotional well-being for every student and family.
