Reigniting Students’ Passion by Celebrating Their Strengths

Stories & Spotlights

Students are often asked about their favorite subject or favorite part of the school day, but for Indiana Gateway Digital Academy (INGDA) 4th grade teacher Candace Hoffman, this question informs a creative approach to adapting her lessons to each student’s individual strengths and interests.

At INGDA, we know that recognizing students’ unique abilities is essential to drive engagement and excitement for learning. Our teachers leverage strength-based learning to lead with students’ natural aptitudes, such as creative writing or spatial design, to meet learners where they are and encourage confidence.

Mrs. Hoffman begins each school year with an interest survey. She asks students about their hobbies and talents to learn more about what drives each of her students so that she is best able to cater to their strengths, interests, and imagination.

Throughout the school year, she engages students by offering choice boards, which allow her learners to pick how they can demonstrate subject mastery on their own terms. Some of her students have created Minecraft worlds or written scripts as part of their assignments while still working within the parameters of state curriculum. This allows her to challenge students while they are doing what they love.

Mrs. Hoffman has found that an individualized approach can be especially instrumental in supporting students who are behind in areas like reading. She holds 1:1 sessions with them to learn more about their passions to help identify reading material that sparks their interest.

“My goal is to celebrate every student’s strengths to give them a sense of purpose,” Mrs. Hoffman said. “I gear my teaching to what drives students and sparks their curiosity. From my experience, when learners feel seen and heard, it greatly impacts their academic performance.”

Encouraging a Love for Learning at Home

Strength-based learning extends beyond the classroom as well. Learning Coaches can play a key role in motivating their students through the following strategies:

  • Work directly with teachers. Strong partnerships between teachers and families can improve student outcomes while supporting a lifelong love of learning. When educators and families share insights and work together, students feel celebrated and empowered to thrive in every environment.
  • Identify opportunities to reframe homework. When a student is struggling, adapting to their learning style at home can help them find their own way back on track. If your student is having trouble writing a summary of what they read, discussing the story together or encouraging them to sketch out a timeline of events can instill the confidence they need to tackle the assignment.
  • Encourage students to explore their passions and talents at home. Parents are often the first witnesses to their students’ raw talents. By tuning in to how your child chooses to spend free time — whether they are creating their own stories, constructing complex builds, or developing motor skills through physical play — you can learn how your child best processes information and encourage these natural inclinations.

Every student deserves to feel that their strengths are appreciated in the classroom and at home. At INGDA, we connect with learners and inspire them to reach their full potential.
